Governor Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi has lauded the initiative even as she commissioned the Kebbi state cancer screening centre, the Birnin Yari healthcare centre and the Jega general hospital
The first lady of Nigeria, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has launched the Kebbi state Maternal and Child week in Kebbi.She set program in motion on Thursday, February 4.
Mrs. Buhari also seized the opportunity to commission the Kebbi state cancer screening exercise. It was a memorable event given Thursday, February 4 was the world cancer day.
She stressed the importance of maternal and infant healthcare, even as she called for more government support in these areas.
The first lady urged the government at all levels to place a huge premium on these areas.
In addition, Mrs. Buhari also commissioned the renovated Birnin Yari primary healthcare centre as well as the Jega general hospital in Jega town.
Speaking at the function, Kebbi state governor Mr. Abubakar Bagudu lauded the initiative, adding that the Maternal and Child Health week was the first of its kind in Kebbi.
Governor Bagudu said the idea was the first since the commencement of the “Saving One Million Lives Initiative” which was created by the World Bank.
He highlighted the importance of the initiative saying it is an initiative which has far-reaching benefits on the lives of both mothers and newborns.
He said: “The initiative is focused on evidence-based, cost effective interventions that are proven, and addresses the leading causes of morbidity and mortality.
“The initiative comprises of several components, which will contribute to saving one million maternal and newborn lives.”
The “Saving One Million Lives Initiative” is a World Bank initiative. It was approved in 2015.
The core aim of the project is to improve considerably maternal, child, and nutrition health services for women and children in Nigeria, as well as help the Government of Nigeria save the lives of over 900,000 children under five as well as women who die yearly from largely preventable diseases and infections.
