Ghanaian Drivers declare nationwide strike over high insurance premiums.
All road transport operators in the country have declared a nationwide strike effective Monday, February 8 following a 300% increment in their insurance premiums.
Addressing a pressing conference in Accra, operators belonging to the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Roads Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) say the increment is likely to affect their productivity as drivers ordering the Ghana Insurance Association and finance ministry to immediately reverse the directive.
The drivers, led by their chairman Charles Danso, argue that the Insurance Commission is not being fair to them, especially when they are not benefitting from the insurance and other transport related charges – a development they have revealed could see them pay anything not more than 250% if the NIC does not reverse the policy.
The nationwide is expected to affect means of transportation in Ghana especially when over 60% of Ghana’s population is documented to fully depend on public transportation.
